Something will be very different in Monday’s regional championship game.
The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes won’t be part of it.
Coming into this year’s postseason, the Shoes had a string of 13 straight regional titles and 17 of the last 18. The last time they didn’t win a regional was 2007. George W. Bush was president.
But that streak came to an end Thursday night in Vandalia. The Salem Tigers took advantage of five T-Town errors, got a pair of clutch two-out hits in the sixth and came away with a 7-6 win in a semifinal game of the Class 2A Vandalia Regional.
The Shoes, who trailed 4-1 early, had battled back to take a 6-4 lead after five innings. But Salem used a single, an error and a hit batter to load the bases with two outs. Carter Rose then delivered a two-run single to tie the game and Charlie Hunter followed with what proved to be the game-winning base hit, bringing home the go-ahead run.
Griffin Day, the third Salem pitcher of the day, allowed only one baserunner in the final two innings, clinching the win for the Tigers and earning them a berth in the regional final against Vandalia. Due to rain, that championship game will be played Monday.
Defense did hurt the Shoes. Two errors allowed one run to score in the first and two more miscues resulted in three more runs crossing the plate in the second, helping Salem build the 4-1 lead.
The Shoes scored six runs on 12 hits through the first five innings and had opportunities to tack on even more. But they left 10 runners on bases – 11 total in the game -- including stranding the bases loaded twice.
THS scored in each of the first five innings. Mitch Althoff had an RBI in the first and Evan Waldhoff added a two-out run-scoring single in the second.
In the third, Kayden Althoff led off with a double and scored on a base hit by Mitch Althoff. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs. But two pop-ups and a strikeout ended that threat.
The Shoes took the lead with a two-run fourth. With two outs, Kayden Althoff blasted a pitch over the leftfield fence for a solo home run. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases. Caleb Siemer came through with an RBI hit, but the bases were still jammed when the final out was recorded.
Teutopolis made it 6-4 in the fifth. Waldhoff walked, Sam Bushur singled and Buehnerkemper had an RBI single – again with no outs. But a double play and a strikeout ended that threat.
Bushur pitched the first 5.2 innings and took the loss. He allowed seven hits and seven runs, but only one of those was earned. He walked one and struck out six.
The Shoes finished their season with a 23-12 record.
The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes will go into the postseason on a high note.
Dylan Pruemer and Tyler Pruemer combined to throw a no-hitter and the Shoes rolled to 10-0, five-inning win at home Monday afternoon over Olney.
T-Town will enter postseason play Wednesday in the Vandalia Regional.
The Pruemers combined to walked three and strike out two in their five innings of work.
The Shoes banged out 12 hits and scored in every inning to provide more than enough offensive support.
It started with a five-run first. The first five hitters got base hits. Sam Bushur and Cade Buehnerkemper got things started and Kayden Althoff, Mitch Althoff followed with RBI singles. With runners at second and third, Dylan Pruemer made it five hits in a row, lacing a two-run single. Garrett Gaddis drove in the fifth run with a ground out.
The Shoes scored twice in the second and third and capped the scoring with a single tally in the fourth.
T-Town finished its regular season with a 23-11 record. The Shoes will now play in the Vandalia Regional and face Salem at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes opened postseason play in impressive fashion Monday afternoon, posting a 9-2 win at home over Shelbyville in a first-round game of the Class 2A Tolono Unity Regional.
Daisha Piedra went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs and Kaylee Niebrugge added three hits and three RBI, helping the Lady Shoes notch their 20th win of the season and earn a berth in the regional semifinal game.
T-Town, the No. 5 seed, will now face No. 4 Westville at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The regional championship is set for 10 a.m. Saturday.
The Lady Shoes scored single tallies in the first and third to take the early lead. Piedra had an RBI double in the opening inning and added a run-scoring single in the third.
THS then took total control with a four-run fifth. Erin Althoff led off with a double and came home to score on a base hit by Emily Konkel. Niebrugge then delivered an RBI double, Piedra followed with a single to drive in Niebrugge and the final run scored on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Sarchet.
The Lady Shoes wrapped up the scoring in the sixth. Niebrugge drove in two with a base hit and Piedra capped her four-hit game with an RBI triple.
Courtney Gibson was strong on the mound. She went all seven innings, allowing just three hits and two runs, both scoring in the sixth. She walked three and struck out eight.
The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes got their final tune-up before the postseason by splitting a doubleheader Saturday at Williamsville.
In the opener, Derek Konkel belted a pair of solo home runs, while Sam Bushur and Kayden Althoff both had three hits, leading the Shoes to an 11-5 win.
The Rockets managed a split by scoring a run in the seventh to tie the game and then getting a walk-off, game-winning single by Kyle Griffith in the 10th that provided the hosts a 5-4 victory.
The Shoes broke out on top early in the first game and were never headed. They scored three runs in both the first and second innings and added a single tally in the third to build a 7-0 lead. Williamsville got within 7-3 and 9-5, but no closer.
In the first inning, Sam Bushur, who continued his hot hitting with three more hits, led things off with a single. Kayden Althoff followed with a base hit and Mitch Althoff got THS on the scoreboard with an RBI single. Dylan Pruemer added a sacrifice fly and Konkel was hit by a pitch that forced in the third run.
Bushur and Cade Buehnerkemper both singled and Kayden Althoff walked to load the bases in the second. Mitch Althoff walked to force in one run and Caleb Siemer delivered a two-out hit to increase the lead to 6-0.
Konkel unloaded on a 1-1 pitch to lead off the third and smacked it over the leftfield fence. The Shoes added two more runs in the fifth, another in the sixth and Konkel then went deep again in the seventh, again over the leftfield fence.
Siemer pitched the first 3.1 innings to get the win. He allowed seven hits and three runs, while walking three and striking out three. Buehnerkemper pitched the rest of the way.
T-Town was within two outs of getting the sweep, but the Rockets staged a seventh-inning rally to tie it up. Alex Kennan got the RBI single. Then in the 10th, Hunter Moser lined a one-out triple. After the next batters were intentionally walked, Griffith came through with the game-winning hit.
Joey Niebrugge, the third THS pitcher, took the loss. Garrett Gaddis was the starter and Evan Waldhoff relieved in the fifth.
The Shoes finished the regular season with a 22-11 mark. They will now play in the Vandalia Regional and face Salem at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
