What a game!
The two teams combined for 29 runs, 37 hits and 11 errors. There were four home runs, including a grand clam. And it took 13 innings to determine a winner.
But the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes used a three-run 13th to emerge as the 16-13 winner Tuesday afternoon at Newton.
The winning rally started after the first two batters had been retired in the top of the 13th. Caleb Bloemer singled and came around to score when Sam Bushur ripped an RBI double. Cade Buehnerkemper followed with another run-scoring double and then scored with Kayden Althoff came through an RBI single.
Bushur, the fifth T-Town pitcher of the day, allowed a lead-off double in the bottom of the inning, but retired the final three batters to seal the victory.
A victory that certainly was leaning Newton’s way after four innings. The host Eagles, who got a first-inning two-run homer from Carder Reich, led 12-5 as the Shoes came to bat in the fifth.
But when Garrett Gaddis led off with a home run, that seemed to spark the comeback. Bushur, who smacked a lead-off solo home run to start the game, added an RBI single and another run scored on an error to make it 12-8
Then in the sixth, Mitch Althoff, Dylan Pruemer and Caleb Siemer all singled to load the bases and Konkel blasted a long grand slam to knot the score at 12-12.
Both teams scored single tallies in the 11th, with Buehnerkemper’s two-out single driving in the THS run.
The Shoes finished with 23 hits. Konkel had four of those to go along with five RBI, while Bushur, Buehnerkemper, Siemer and Bloemer each had three hits.
Kayden Althoff started and went the first three innings, allowing eight runs and six hits. Gaddis gave up four more runs, but Ben Goeckner, Buehnerkemper and Bushur combined to shut Newton down over the final 9.1 innings of work. That threesome allowed just five hits and one unearned run, while walking just one and striking out six. Bushur worked the final two innings to get the win.
The Shoes improved to 12-6 on the season. They will return to action Thursday with a game at Mattoon.
After using his bat in a big way the past three games, Caleb Siemer used his arm to help the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes win Monday afternoon.
He turned in a seven-inning, 98-pitch complete game, helping the Shoes post a 5-1 victory at home over South Central.
Siemer allowed six hits, while walking two and striking out nine.
He gave up two singles and a sacrifice fly by South Central’s Beau Jolliff in the opening inning.
The Shoes tied the game in the bottom of the first. Sam Bushur led off with a base hit, but was thrown out trying to go to third after a single by Cade Buehnerkemper. But Buehnerkemper went to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
It stayed 1-1 until the fourth. The Shoes pushed across four runs on just one hit. They combined two walks, two hit batters and two wild pitches, along with an RBI single by Buehnerkemper, who had three of his team’s five hits in the game.
The Cougars had a good scoring chance in the top of the fourth when their first three hitters singled to load the bases. But Siemer struck out the next two batters and then got a ground ball to end the threat. The righthander allowed just one more hit over the final three innings.
The Shoes improved to 11-6 on the season. They will play today (Tuesday) at Newton.
Caleb Siemer, fresh off his walk-off 10th inning double Thursday, was back at it Friday.
He blasted a three-run homer and drove in four runs total, helping the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes post their fourth straight win, a 10-5 decision at home over Centralia.
It was also a special day for Kayden Althoff. After tearing his ACL in a basketball game in December, the senior got to bat for the first time Friday afternoon and made the most of it. He went 2-for-4 and belted a long solo home run in the sixth inning.
After the Orphans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Shoes took control with a five-run second.
Mitch Althoff led off by drawing a walk. Dylan Pruemer and Garrett Gaddis both singled to load the bases with no outs. Siemer drove in the first run with a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Max Niebrugge delivered an RBI single, followed by a two-run double by Sam Bushur and another run-scoring double by Cade Buehnerkemper to cap the inning.
T-Town broke it open with a three-run third – thanks to Siemer. Mitch Althoff reached on an error and Pruemer reached base when he swung and missed on strike three, but the ball got away from the catcher. Siemer then drove a 1-2 pitch over the leftfield fence to increase the lead to 8-1.
Pruemer was the winning pitcher. He went the first five innings, allowing three hits and four runs. He walked four and struck out seven. Ben Goeckner and Siemer combined to pitch the final two innings.
The Shoes improved to 10-5 on the season. They will return to action today (Saturday), traveling to Nashville, and then return home Monday to face South Central.
For the third straight day, Caleb Siemer had a big hit.
But this time, it wasn’t quite enough.
Siemer belted a sixth-inning grand slam and Teutopolis scored another run in the seventh, but it couldn’t completely make up the six-run deficit, as the Wooden Shoes fell short, dropping an 8-7 decision at Nashville.
The Hornets, who improved to 18-4 on the season, scored in four of the first five innings to build an 8-2 lead. A two-run homer by Ian Blazier in the second helped Nashville build that six-run advantage.
But the Shoes came battling back. In the top of the sixth, Mitch Althoff walked, Dylan Pruemer was hit by a pitch and Garrett Gaddis received a free pass to load the bases with no outs. Siemer then drilled an 0-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a grand slam to narrow the gap to 8-6.
In the seventh, the first two batters got on base. Kayden Althoff reached on an error and Mitch Althoff singled to get things started. Pruemer drove in the run with a ground out, but the final two batters were retired.
T-Town also got single tallies in the first and third inning. Cade Buehnerkemper drove in the first run with a ground out and Kayden Althoff had an RBI single in the third.
Derek Konkel pitched the first four innings and took the loss. He gave up eight hits and six runs – only three were earned – while walking two and striking out five. Joey Niebrugge gave up a pair of runs in the fifth and Siemer went 1.1 innings of scoreless ball.
The Shoes dropped to 10-6 on the season. They will return to action Monday with a home game against South Central.
Caleb Siemer lined a double over the centerfielder’s head in the bottom of the 10th inning, driving in two runs and giving the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes a walk-off 4-3 win at home Thursday over Mt. Zion.
The visiting Braves had scored a run in the top of the 10th, but the Shoes wasted no time turning that around in the bottom of the inning. Dylan Pruemer led off with a double and Garrett Gaddis walked. Pruemer went to third on a wild pitch and Gaddis stole second, setting the stage for Siemer, who smashed a 1-1 pitch deep into centerfield that allowed the winning runs to race home.
T-Town also had to rally in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Trailing 2-1, Caleb Bloemer led with a base hit. He then stole second base and scored when Cade Buehnerkemper delivered a clutch RBI single.
The Shoes took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Sam Bushur led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Buehnerkemper.
Mt. Zion scored single tallies in the fifth and sixth.
Gaddis pitched the top of the 10th inning to get the win. Bushur was the starter and went the first 4-2 innings, giving up three hits and a run. Buehnerkemper went the next 4.1 innings and allowed two hits and a pair of runs. The three hurlers combined to walk 10 and strike out seven.
The Shoes improved to 9-5 on the season. They will return to action Saturday, traveling to Nashville.
