Paige Cutright is one of the better softball pitchers in the area and proved why Monday afternoon.
The Casey-Westfield hurler allowed just two hits in her 78-pitch performance and posted a 9-0 shutout at home over Teutopolis.
Cutright walked two and struck out seven. She allowed two-out singles to Danielle Sarchet and Estella Mette – both in the fourth inning.
Cutright also had a pair of hits and drove in three runs for the Lady Warriors. Casey-Westfield scored a single tally in the second, added three runs in the third and then broke it open with a five-run sixth. They finished with 12 hits.
Courtney Gibson took the loss for T-Town.
The Lady Shoes dipped to 5-2 on the spring. They are scheduled to play today (Tuesday) at Greenville and then return home to face Altamont on Thursday.
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes played two games Saturday and came away with a pair of victories.
In the opener, T-Town fell behind early, but then scored in four consecutive innings to post a 9-3 win over Gillespie.
In the second game, THS scored three runs in the opening inning and went on to beat Vandalia 7-4.
In the first game, the Lady Miners led 2-0, but the Lady Shoes tied the score in the bottom of the third. Olivia Copple led off with a base hit and scored on a triple by Erin Althoff. The second run scored on a sacrifice fly by Daisha Piedra.
Teutopolis took the lead with a three-run fourth. Danielle Sarchet singled and Estella Mette was hit by a pitch to get the inning started. Runs eventually scored on an error, a hit batter with the bases loaded and a wild pitch.
The Lady Shoes wrapped up their scoring with a single tally in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth.
Courtney Gibson got the win. She pitched all seven innings, allowing seven hits and three runs. She struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter.
Mette had an RBI single, Sarchet drove in a run with a fly ball and a third run scored on a ground ball, as the Lady Shoes broke out to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning against Vandalia. Summer Wall belted a home run in the second. Mette and Kaylee Niebrugge both finished with two RBI in the game.
Jordan Goeckner was the winning pitcher. She pitched 5.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs. She walked three and struck out five.
The Lady Shoes are now 5-1. They will play today (Monday) at Casey-Westfield.
Oh, so close!
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes played a strong game, staged a late rally and were within just one out of knocking off top-seeded Mt. Carmel and claiming a regional championship.
But credit the Lady Aces for putting together a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 4-3 win over T-Town Saturday and capture the Class 2A Regional A title.
With one out in the seventh, Mt. Carmel got a one-out walk to Hailey Long and a base hit by Emma Banks to start the comeback. After a strikeout for the second out, Kami Pearson, who had homered earlier in the game, was given an intentional walk to load the bases.
That brought in Carli Mette, who had struck out each of her three previous plate appearances. But she drew a walk to force in the tying run and Stormie Devine then lined a pitch over the leftfielder’s head for the game-winning, walk-off hit to give the Lady Aces the regional championship and a berth in the sectional tournament.
Both pitchers – Faith Fuller for Mt. Carmel and Tia Probst for Teutopolis – pitched well.
Until the seventh, the only runs Probst gave up were in the third. Kenzi Sisson had a lead-off single, and with two outs, Pearson lined a pitch over the leftfield fence to put the host Lacy Aces on top 2-0.
Daisha Piedra and Kaylee Niebrugge both drove in three runs, helping the Teutopolis Lady Shoes post a 9-4 win at home Monday afternoon.
Piedra went 3-for-4 and Niebrugge added a pair of hits to lead the 10-hit attack.
The Lady Shoes scored three runs in the third and added four more in the fourth to build a 7-0 lead. The Lady Tigers tallied three times in the fifth, but T-Town pushed across two runs in the sixth.
Courtney Gibson went all seven innings to get the win. She gave up 10 hits and four runs. She didn’t walk a batter and struck out six.
The Lady Shoes, now 2-1, will return to action Thursday. They will play at home against Vandalia.

ET Sports Report
It’s been nearly 15 months since high school postseason sports of any kind have been played in Illinois.
And for spring sports, it’s been two years.
But the goal in postseason hasn’t changed at all.
Survive and advance.
And that’s what the Teutopolis Lady Shoes did Thursday afternoon.
They didn’t capitalize on all their scoring opportunities, but they scored enough.
Their pitcher didn’t have her best game, but she was good enough.
And when the final out was recorded, the Lady Shoes had an 8-4 victory at home over Newton in an opening-round game of the Class 2A Regional A.
“It’s playoff time,” THS coach Crystal Tipton said. “I felt it all day. It’s exciting.
“COVID ruined everything last year,” Tipton added. “So it was great to be playing in the postseason again. We had a great crowd and it was a great atmosphere.”
