The ability to deliver two-out hits can be a key in any softball game.
It certainly was Wednesday afternoon.
The Teutopolis Lady Shoes came through three times and that proved to be enough, as they posted a 3-1 victory at Olney.
Daischa Piedra, Tia Probst and Erin Althoff each came through in the clutch with two-out hits that drove in a run each time.
It started in the opening inning. With two outs, Lexie Niebrugge doubled and Piedra followed with a base hit to put the Lady Shoes on top 1-0.
T-Town increased its lead to 2-0 in the third. Althoff reached on an error and Lexie Niebrugge singled. Then with two outs, Probst came through with a base hit, driving in Althoff.
After Olney trimmed the lead to 2-1, the Lady Shoes tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. With two outs, Danielle Sarchet lined a double and Althoff followed with another two-bagger, driving Sarchet home.
Courtney Gibson turned in a strong pitching performance. She went seven innings and gave up just three hits and one unearned run. She walked four and struck out seven.
The Lady Shoes are now 10-6 on the season. They are scheduled to play today (Thursday) at Mahomet-Seymour.
For the third straight game, the Teutopolis Lady Shoes came to bat in the bottom of the seventh trailing.
Twice on Saturday against Mt. Zion, they staged a rally, only to come up short.
Monday’s effort produced a different result.
Kaylee Nibrugge delivered a two-out, two-run single in the seventh to tie the game and Estella Mette then came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Lady Shoes to a 8-7 victory.
T-Town trailed 7-3 in the seventh. Mette was hit by a pitch and Danielle Sarchet doubled to get the seventh-inning rally started. Erin Althoff followed with an RBI single and Emily Konkel lifted a sacrifice fly to close the gap to 7-5.
Lexie Niebrugge walked, and both she and Althoff moved up to second and third on a ground out. Kaylee Niebrugge then came through with the big two-out hit to tie the game.
Newton put two runners on base in the top of the eighth, but failed to score.
In the bottom of the inning, Courtney Gibson led off with single and went to second when the outfielder misplayed it. Mette then lined a 1-2 pitch up the middle and Gibson raced home with the walk-off game winner.
The Lady Shoes broke on top 3-0 in the first inning. One run scored on an error, Kaylee Niebrugge had a sacrifice fly to bring in the second run and Tia Probst capped the inning with an RBI single.
Newton then scored twice in the second, added the tying run in the fifth and then took a 7-3 lead with a four-run sixth.
Probst pitched all eight innings to get the win. She allowed 10 hits and seven runs, while walking seven and striking out four.
The Lady Shoes are now 9-6 on the season. They are scheduled to play today (Tuesday) at Olney.
Courtney Gibson turned in five strong innings of work and Lexie Niebrugge drove in three runs, helping the Teutopolis Lady Shoes post a 7-3 win Friday afternoon at home against Salt Fork.
After the guests scored two runs in the opening inning, the Lady Shoes responded immediately. Erin Althoff and Emily Konkel both walked and Lexie Niebrugge then ripped a triple to drive in both runners. Tia Probst followed with a run-scoring single and Kaylee Niebrugge capped the four-run frame with an RBI single.
T-Town tacked on single tallies in the second, third and fourth innings.
In the second, Danielle Sarchet led off with a triple and scored on a base hit by Althoff. In the third, Probst reached on an error and scored on a two-out double by Gibson. In the fourth, Althoff reached on an error, stole a base and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Lexie Niebrugge.
Gibson pitched the first five innings to get the win. She allowed five hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out five. Probst pitched the final two innings to earn the save. She didn’t allow a hit, walked one and struck out three.
The Lady Shoes improved to 8-4 on the season. They will return to action today (Saturday), playing at home against Mt. Zion in an Apollo Conference game. THS is 1-1 in league play.
Mt. Zion’s ability to score runs late in the game led to a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Teutopolis in an Apollo Conference match-up.
In the opener, the Lady Braves scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth and held on for a 6-4 win. Mt. Zion then pushed a run across in the top of the eighth to post a 4-3 victory in the nightcap to complete the sweep of the twin-bill.
In the first game, the Lady Shoes scored single tallies in the first and fourth. Lexie Niebrugge’s ground ball drove in Emily Konkel, who had tripled, in the opening inning. In the fourth, a walk, an error and a two-out single by Estella Mette put THS ahead, 2-1.
But Mt. Zion got a bases-clearing double by Dakota Harrison to take a 4-2 lead in the fifth and then added two more in the sixth.
The Lady Shoes made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Mette doubled and then scored on Erin Althoff’s two-out RBI single. After Konkel walked, Lexie Niebrugge drove in a run with a base hit. But Daischa Piedra flied out to end the threat.
Tia Probst pitched all seven innings and took the loss. She allowed nine hits and six runs, while walking four and striking out two.
T-Town needed another seventh-inning rally in the second game, coming to bat trailing 3-0.
With one out, Mette was hit by a pitch and Danielle Sarchet doubled. Althoff’s sacrifice fly got the Lady Shoes on the board. Then with two outs, Konkel ripped a triple bringing home Sarchet and Lexie Niebrugge followed with a base hit that brought in the tying run.
But in the top of the eighth, Kayla Schnippel delivered an RBI single to drive home what proved to be the winning run for Mt. Zion.

The Lady Shoes are now 8-6 overall and 1-2 in league play. They will play at home Monday against Newton and then travel to Olney on Tuesday.
Tia Probst had quite a day.
She pitched a three-hitter and drove in two runs, helping the Teutopolis Lady Shoes post a 4-1 win at home over Lincoln in an Apollo Conference softball contest.
Probst shut down the Lady Railers throughout. She allowed just one run, while walking two and striking out eight in her seven innings of work.
She also helped at the plate.
In the first inning, Erin Althoff and Emily Konkel got things going with back-to-back singles. Probst’s ground out drove home the first run.
In the third, Althoff singled and eventually scored on an error. Probst then delivered a two-out RBI double to increase the THS lead to 3-0.
After Lincoln scored in the top of the sixth, T-Town responded in the bottom of the frame. Probst singled, courtesy runner Olivia Copple went to second on a ground ball and then scored on a base hit by Estella Mette.
The Lady Shoes improved to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the Apollo Conference. They will return to action Friday with a home game against Salt Fork and play at home again Saturday, facing Mt. Zion in another conference game.
